Andaman – The destination of delight. Looking for a dream holiday destination within India for you and your family members? Andaman it is! Andaman is a great tourist attraction overall which is famous for crystal clear turquoise waters. It is rightly popular as vacationers paradise and offers beautiful white sandy beaches for the sea lovers.

Andaman is basically an archipelago with 572 islands with only 36 which are inhabited and only 12 of them open for tourists. You would be amazed to know that Andaman is actually a Malay word for Lord Hanuman. How did this name come through? It is believed that Lord Hanuman actually landed upon the islands on his way to Lanka in search of Sita.

LWhen it comes to language – Andaman is no different than India with Bengali being the most widely spoken followed by Hindi and a few others like Tamil, Telugu and Malayam.

Andaman is not just a leisure tourist location, it has great historic significance. The infamous Kaala Paani prison held reverred freedom fighters like Swatantryaveer Savarkar and Batukeshwar Dutta along with hundreds of other freedom fighters. In fact the cellular jail where these freedom fighters were held is now turned into a museum which is something you should look forward to see whilst in Andaman. And that is not all – they also have a laser show in the evening depicting the great freedom struggle of India.

When it comes to natural habitats Andaman is not behind of anything. Being the nesting ground for world’s largest sea turtles – the leatherbacks – dont be frigthened if you sit on a rock on the beach that actually moves after a while! And if its not the turtles that interest you then you might go hunt for some crabs – especially you might lay your hands on the Coconut Crab which gets its name from a very unique quality found only in this type of crabs. They actually climb up coconut trees and eat the coconuts – hence the name!

Fun fact – Andaman and Nicobar Islands makes a mark on our daily life – just look back at the red colored 20 rupees note and you will know what we are talking about.

Talking further about nature – you are simply going to love the terrific mix of natural delights in terms of beaches, water life, thousands of colorful species of butterflies that migrate from the nearby tropical islands. Infact the state animal of Andaman is Dugong. For those who dont know – The Dugong is a medium-sized marine mammal. It is one of four living species of the order Sirenia, which also includes three species of manatees. If you are lucky you are going to spot one of them whilst in Andaman! Apart from that Andaman also boasts with the largest variety of Coral reefs in the entire world. Move away Thailand – our own Andaman Islands have nearly 197 species of Coral repositories spread over 13 sites. So you are in for a visual delight incase you are a scuba lover or even someone who wants to try it out just once.

Another amazing attraction on the Andaman is the Alfred caves. Alfred Caves are home to the swiftlet birds which happen to create edible nests using their saliva in the limestone caves. And whats more is these caves simply change their shape every monsoon apparently due to chemical process. So every time you go to Alfred caves, they are going to look a wee bit different.
