Dunagiri is a historic area in Almora district in the state of Uttarakhand in India. Situated at a height of 8,000 feet above sea level, Dunagiri is famous within Kumaon for Dunagiri temple which is also known as temple of Shakti . The temple offers one of the best and widest views of the Himalayan ranges.
It’s at a distance of 14Km from Dwarahar and its considered to be the temple of Goddess Durga. Amidst nature’s generosity in abundance, One needs to climb 365 steps to reach to the main temple and get sight of Goddess Dunagiri. It’s a belief that while carrying sanjivani booti herb for Lord Lakshmans a small piece of it fell down by lord Hanuman and that’s the reason the temple is named Dunagiri as Duna means fell.
Also, according to Hindu mythology the Pandavas from Mahabharat had their temporary stay here, They stayed in a place which is known as Pandukholi now. Apart from that numerous saints and came here to meditate in solitude.
